I've played a number of tactical boardgames over the years and have even used some of them to create training problems for my real-life tank platoon. I've also done a lot of study on the tank combat on the Eastern Front during World War II.
Based on what I know about the nature of those tank battles, there is no question that Storms of Steel is the most realistic boardgame simulation of armored combat on the Eastern Front that I have ever played. It is without question the best boardgame that I have ever played in terms of accurately representing the tank tactics used by both sides.

Price of Honour is the game to play any tactical scenario from the 1939 Polish Campaign. For previous owners of this system, it is different to play and game with the far more unique and brittle armies of 1939 who were all in the midst of some internal chaos or reorganization. Tremendous replay value here with the ability to cook up many of your own scenario’s with the Polish, German and Soviet forces, from Polish tanks and cavalry to Soviet T-26’s and BT-5’s to the German Army you think you knew – it’s all there. When you take into account that Uwe listened to his customers and provided a great insert for game pieces, how can you not love the game?

While we’re diving into non-Euro games, let’s head as far the other direction as we can get. Conflict of Heroes: Awakening the Bear! – Russia 1941-1942 (what a name) is a traditional hex-and-counter wargame that explores the German invasion of Russia (Operation Barbarossa), at the squad/platoon level. Hey Geekshelfers! I just wanted to take a few minutes to talk to you about the latest boardgame I've played. It's called Conflict of Heroes: Storms of Steel. For the uninitiated, this is a squad-based tactical war boardgame, from the award winning creator of "Awakening The Bear", the first of the Conflict of Heroes series created by Uwe Eickert. The first game Rob and I brought out at PrezCon was Conflict of Heroes: Price of Honour. I had received this for Christmas, and I was really excited to put it on the table. After realizing I didn't have the trucks handy to do Scenario 1, we decided to play Scenario 2, called Cavalry Charge! It depicts the Charge at Krojanty, where the 18th Pomeranian Uhlans Regiment bravely slowed the advance of a German infantry regiment which was supported by some armored vehicles. Read More...

Anyone who has investigated this game series is probably first stuck by the amount of praise the game components receive. They are worth of that praise. Counters are large and detailed, maps are hefty and clear. The cards, while functional, don’t quite live up to the standards in the rest of the components, but are passable. This quality does come at a price as the larger games in the CoH series are among the more expensive squad level games pushing $80 at retail. But you do get what you pay for. Read More...

New found online gaming buddy Jared Cantrell and I got in a game of Conflict of Heroes Awakening the Bear, scenario number 2 using the Zun Tzu software, which allows us to play this excellent WWII board game over the internet.
I took a few screen shots of the game and will add a little detail, but Jared also contributed a little flavor with some narration with some historical flavor.
The initial moves of the Germans find them swinging out far to the right. They run into the Russian rifle squad in the heavy woods, which starts putting up a good fight and slowing up the German attack. Read More...

Where older games sometimes had reaction fire and overwatch bolted on as a sort of afterthought, it’s fundamental to the CoH rules engine. Each time a unit moves into a new hex, the enemy has an opportunity to react if they have the action points remaining to do so. This makes play more fluid and means each player actually has things to do during the opponent’s turn. Read More...

E é este último confronto que o Strike of the Eagle tenta retratar. Read More...

The CoH system encourages realistic combined weapons interaction to accurately portray battlefield usage.

After demoing the game with my 10 year old son (who picked up the rules for this game right away—much more quickly than he did Tide of Iron or CC:E), I asked him if he liked it. He smiled and nodded. Me too, I said.

COH is what I have been looking for in a "lite" WWII wargame. It is easy to teach and plays very smoothly.

Every second of the game is tense and you are constantly thinking, reacting, formulating new plans, etc. Even euro players should take a look at this.

Finally a wargame that computer gamers and Eurogamers love to play!
